Fecal Incontinence due to Sphincter Muscle Loss: Present Palliative Strategies
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction Fetal incontinence due to agenesis or damage of the sphincter apparatus is a major cause of social dilemma in the pediatric, adolescent and adult population. The anal sphincter consists of an internal sphincter which is a smooth muscle complex and is responsible among other factors for the maintenance of resting pressures. The internal sphincter is surrounded by an external sphincter which is a skeletal muscle complex and is responsible for the voluntary control of defecation. In the neonatal patient, anorectal malformations especially the high forms of anal atresia are associated with varying severities of incontinence. This monogram addresses the various “make-shift” options applied for the maintenance of incontinence.

Hypothesis / aims of study Fecal incontinence is a major debilitating condition that primarily affects women due to childbirth injuries. Most women who have acute injury to their anal sphincters remain asymptomatic, and injuries remain occult for a long time before women present with symptoms of fecal incontinence. Although anal physiology has been investigated previously, no animal model has b...
متن کاملUltrastructural changes in internal anal sphincter in neurogenic faecal incontinence.
The ultrastructural features of the internal anal sphincter (IAS) muscle were studied in biopsies from five patients with neurogenic anorectal incontinence and six control subjects undergoing anorectal excision for cancer, or for inflammatory bowel disease. In the patients with idiopathic neurogenic anorectal incontinence the internal anal sphincter showed loss of smooth muscle cells, disruptio...
متن کاملSurvey of anal sphincter dysfunction using anal manometry in patients with fecal incontinence: a possible guide to therapy
BACKGROUND Despite the surge of new medical and surgical approaches to treat fecal incontinence, the types of sphincter abnormalities in patients with incontinence have not been well characterized. We aimed to categorize anal sphincter dysfunction using anorectal manometry in patients with fecal incontinence as a potential guide for improved treatment. METHODS A retrospective review of 162 co...
